Careers In Depth: International Development Panel

Thought Leaders and Innovators from International Development-oriented social enterprises were on hand Monday, March 2nd at the Center for Social Innovation.  The diverse panelists, Tomoko Matsukawa of Acumen, Rohit Acharya of First Access, Victoria Crispo of Idealist, and Connie Lewin of Sustainable Health Enterprises, along with thought-provoking moderator Marcos Salazar of Be Social Change, provided Net Impact Members with strategic career advice and industry insights. Thoughts from the panelists on personal and career development: Rigor, patience, and optimism are the keys to long-term success when working with social innovation in emerging markets. Be conscious of how you’re spending your time and who you are spending it with. There are major differences in communication styles across cultures – in order to succeed, you need to understand the nuances of the various cultures in which you operate. The value of soft skills can surpass that of hard skills when building relationships. Understand deeply the challenges that you’re working to overcome and how they affect the people you serve. Stay curious. Be empowered by small victories. Reflection enables growth. When applying for a job, frame your application as a solution to an organizational problem.
